Conducting Manual Handling Risk Assessments for Data Center Sites

Challenge

As part of Antea Group’s ongoing annual support, a global technology client engaged our services to conduct a manual handling risk assessment at one of their co-location data center sites in the UK. This assignment was initiated in response to a request from the data center manager, coupled with the client’s legal obligation to assess and mitigate workplace risks.

The project scope involved an Antea Group UK consultant conducting a site visit, identifying manual handling tasks performed by the client’s employees, evaluating associated risks, and delivering a comprehensive, written risk assessment.

Solution

Antea Group UK assigned an ergonomics consultant with expertise in workplace risk assessments to address the client’s manual handling challenges. Using the T.I.L.E. (Task, Individual, Load, Environment) tool, the consultant systematically evaluated risks associated with lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tasks. Specifically using pallet trucks and server lifts. On-site evaluations identified activities, and practical alternatives were explored, including task adjustments, ergonomic improvements, and use of equipment. The team provided a detailed report with actionable recommendations aligned with regulatory compliance and operational needs. The project was completed within a defined timeline, ensuring the client’s workplace safety goals were met efficiently and effectively.

Result

The project was completed efficiently, with the site visit conducted within 2 weeks of the client’s request and the risk assessment delivered within 48 hours of the visit. Including requesting and obtaining access to the highly secure data center. This ensured the project met the client’s expedited timeline.

As a result, the client achieved compliance with legal requirements and gained actionable insights to mitigate manual handling risks. This not only improved workplace safety but also demonstrated a commitment to employee well-being.

The swift execution of the project showcased Antea Group UK’s ability to adapt to urgent needs, positioning the client for future proactive risk management and safety enhancements.
