Product Lifecycle Analysis (LCA)

Product lifecycle carbon analysis is used to measure the total carbon emissions throughout a product's entire lifecycle. It begins with raw material extraction and extends all the way to the end-of-life stage, whether that’s disposal or recycling.

LCAs are a key tool in measuring Scope 3 supply chain emissions. Many large buying organisations, construction projects, and government contracts require high quality, standardised carbon data to help support their efforts to reach decarbonisation targets, meet UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings standards, or reduce indirect emissions from the supply chain. A Product LCA provides a consistent and comparable approach to allow these entities to calculate and reduce their carbon footprint.

Demonstrate your Product’s Carbon Footprint

Consumers are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of the things they buy. Products with a demonstrably low carbon footprint or carbon neutral status are more attractive in the marketplace.

Product LCAs also allow manufacturers to measure key performance metrics associated with their product ranges. That data supports reporting to Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and U.K. Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS).

Stages of a Lifecycle Carbon Analysis

  • Raw materials: emissions associated with farming, mining or processing materials
  • Transportation of goods: Shipping of raw materials and other components to your facility
  • Manufacturing & Production: Energy and resources used in processes
  • Shipping to customer: Transporting finished goods for distribution or to your end customer
  • In-use: Emissions generated whilst a product is being use
  • End-of-life: Emissions from disposal, reuse or recycling
